Euskalmet WAM Basque Coast

Euskalmet operates the WAM model implemented by AZTI in the Basque Country waters.

WAM (WAve prediction Model) is a third generation ocean wave prediction model developed by a group of scientists from different countries around the world.

WAM is forced by the winds obtained with WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting model) run by Euskalmet and spectra provided by the WAVEWATCH III wave model run by NOAA.

WAM provides a 3-day forecast of the wave field with a horizontal resolution of about 1.6 km in the SE Bay of Biscay. It is validated with the local wave buoys. One application of the forecast is to feed the wave impact model that is the core of the Basque Maritime – Coastal Early Warning System.
